TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2021

Triathlon World Championship

A message from Alexandra Fehon – Triathlon Australia National Age Group Manager:

I just wanted to let you know that I have placed the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy, Appeal Policy and 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Application Links onto the Triathlon Australia website. I would like to take this opportunity to thank one of our age group team members Barry Lipp from Melbourne who has spent the last week assisting me with the selection policy. Barry kindly donates his time to the Triathlon Australia Age Group Committee and we appreciate all the work he does in his own time to assist the Australian Age Group Team programs.

I would like to be as transparent as possible to age group athletes who may be looking at potential selection to the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team – Edmonton and or Bermuda:

The 2021 International Triathlon Union Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon, Age Group Super Sprint Triathlon and Age Group Standard Distance Aquabike World Championships are scheduled to occur in Edmonton, Canada – 17th to 22nd of August 2021.

The 2021 International Triathlon Union Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) and Age Group Mixed Team Relay World Championships are scheduled to occur in Hamilton, Bermuda in October 2021 (exact date to be confirmed).

Due to the challenging and ever-changing global health pandemic one or both of the 2021 International Triathlon Union Age Group Triathlon World Championship events may be postponed or cancelled at a later date. The Australian Government has a current ban on international travel for all Australian citizens and this ban may be in place for some time. Australian age group athletes may not be able to leave Australia to attend the 2021 International Triathlon Union Age Group Triathlon World Championships in either Edmonton and or Bermuda due to Australian Government travel bans which may be in place for all Australian citizens at such time.

Athletes should also be aware that the ITU and or the local organising committees in Edmonton and or Bermuda may require event participants to undertake pre-travel and pre-event health checks and to comply with health and safety directions at the event.

Triathlon Australia urges all Australian age group athletes to consider the current global climate including health risks, potential event postponements/cancellations, Australian Government international travel bans when deciding to undertake potential selection for the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team – Edmonton and or Bermuda.

Triathlon Australia at its discretion may not select a 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team to attend the 2021 ITU Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon, Age Group Super Sprint Triathlon and Age Group Standard Distance Aquabike World Championships – Edmonton, Canada and or the 2021 ITU Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) and Age Group Mixed Team Relay World Championships – Hamilton, Bermuda for reasons including but not limited to Australian Government international travel restrictions and health risks to athletes. Triathlon Australia shall not be responsible or liable in any way to anyone for any consequence of a decision not to select a 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team – Edmonton and or Bermuda.

If the 2021 ITU Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon, Super Sprint Triathlon and Standard Distance Aquabike World Championships – Edmonton, Canada and or the 2021 ITU Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) World Championships – Hamilton, Bermuda are cancelled by the International Triathlon Union and or the Local Organising Committee athletes will be refunded their $75.00 per individual application fee to Triathlon Australia less the Active Network processing online fee of $3.75.

If Triathlon Australia at its discretion does not select a 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team, athletes who have applied for this team will be refunded their $75.00 per individual application fee to Triathlon Australia minus the Active Network online processing fee of $3.75.

2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy:

The 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy – Edmonton and Bermuda includes the following events:

Potential Automatic Qualification 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Applicants:

As I have previously noted athletes who had applied for the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team may seek potential automatic qualification to the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team – Edmonton and Bermuda. I have noted this information in the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy in Clause G – Selection Criteria – 2(a) Automatic Qualification on page 9. G 2(a) Applied for the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team and had their application received and confirmed by Triathlon Australia. 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Applicants may only validate a potential automatic selection in the individual distance for which they had applied for the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team. For example, an athlete who had applied for the 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team in the Standard Distance Triathlon event may only validate a potential automatic selection in the Standard Distance Triathlon event. 2020 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon Team applicants may validate a potential automatic selection in the Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) – Bermuda event and or the Age Group Super Sprint Triathlon event – Edmonton.

To validate this automatic qualification, athletes must meet all the eligibility criteria as outlined in Clause F of the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy page 8.

Confirmed 2020 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Applicants can be located on the Triathlon Australia website

https://www.triathlon.org.au/Age_Group_Team/2021_Australian_Age_Group_Team_-_Multisport__Almere__and_Triathlon__Edmonton_and_Bermuda_/2021_Australian_Age_Group_Triathlon_Team_-_Edmonton_and_Bermuda.htm

2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Discretionary Selections:

What happens if I cannot travel to a nominated 2020/2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Event and thus cannot validate my potential automatic qualification?

What happens if I do not have a local area nominated 2020/2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Event and thus cannot validate my potential automatic qualification?

Due to a number of local Covid-19 rules and restrictions and interstate boarder restrictions in place currently across Australia, Triathlon Australia understands athletes may not be able to travel to a local and or interstate
2020/2021 selection race. Due to the impact of Covid-19 on our race directors’ athletes may also not have a local 2020/2021 selection race to attend as these local races have been cancelled and not rescheduled. For age group athletes who are currently affected by Covid-19 restrictions please do not worry or panic.

Triathlon Australia can select athletes via a discretionary clause in the 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy – Edmonton and Bermuda.

2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team (Edmonton and Bermuda) Discretionary Selections – 2021 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection

injury or illness (which must be accompanied by a medical report signed by a registered medical practitioner) or any other factor including Covid-19 restrictions etc, such as mechanical failure or extenuating circumstances that have affected an athlete’s performance in any relevant event.
